The aluminium versus uPVC window debate has been running for years, and for good reason — both materials have genuine strengths. But in Queensland's subtropical climate, the playing field is quite different from Europe or southern Australia, where uPVC first gained popularity.
Aluminium: The Queensland Standard
Aluminium has dominated the Australian window market for decades, and particularly in Queensland. The reasons are practical:
Strength-to-weight ratio: Aluminium is exceptionally strong for its weight, allowing larger panels, slimmer sightlines, and longer spans than uPVC profiles, which require internal steel reinforcement for larger sizes.
Thermal tolerance: Queensland summers push temperatures well above 30°C regularly. uPVC expands and contracts significantly with temperature change — in extreme heat, uPVC frames can warp or distort over time. Aluminium's lower expansion coefficient means frames stay true even in harsh conditions.
UV resistance: Queensland's UV index is among the highest in the world. Powder-coated aluminium is highly resistant to UV degradation, maintaining colour and surface integrity for decades. Early uPVC formulations were notorious for yellowing; modern uPVC is better, but aluminium remains the proven performer.
Slimline profiles: Aluminium allows much slimmer frame profiles than uPVC, which is why it dominates in architectural and high-end residential projects.
uPVC Strengths
uPVC has genuine advantages in some areas:
Thermal break as standard: uPVC frames are inherently poor conductors of heat, whereas standard aluminium frames conduct heat readily. Thermally broken aluminium profiles can match uPVC thermal performance, but at higher cost.
No corrosion: uPVC is impervious to salt air — an advantage in harsh coastal environments. Powder-coated aluminium is very good, but uPVC is effectively immune.
Lower cost: For basic residential window openings, uPVC can be a cost-effective choice.
Our Verdict for Queensland
For most Gold Coast and broader Queensland applications — particularly larger openings, premium residential projects, and commercial work — aluminium remains the superior choice. The material's strength, UV stability, and design flexibility are better suited to the conditions and the design demands of Queensland architecture.
uPVC is a reasonable choice for budget-conscious projects with smaller, standard-size openings where thermal performance is the primary concern.
